Congressional News Comments When tio Quit rankly Congress should quit and go home The House of Representa tives has already completed most of the constructive legislation that can be expected of it during this session The Senate 'of course is lagging far behind with its work schedule and only a guess as to when theymay finally close up shop Under the "streamlining reorganization passed by Congress in 1947 Section 132 reads as follows: in time of war or during a national emer gency proclaimed by the President the two Houses shall adjourn sine die not later than the last day (Sundays excepted) in the month of July in each year unless otherwise provided by the Speaker Rayburn has held that we are still in a state of war 'and that an emergency exists and therefore Congress can remain in session without paying any attention to the above mentioned Reorganiza tion Act A majority of the Members of the House want to adjourn and get back to their home districts This seems like a sensible thing to do It Would be a good thing for the country if there were some way by which the last two or three weeks of Congress might be operated so as to avoid hastily considered unnecessary and faulty legislation which often is rush ed through during the closing days of any session urthermore if Con gress were to go home now they could not appropriate or spend any more money That in itself would be both objective and timely Also if Members were permitted to go home they would find out at first hand what the people in their di tricts are thinking about If this writer can properly interpret his mail the people are not asking for nor do they want most of the things Congress is continually proposing to do NOTICE EXAMINATION OR CERTIICATE A special examination for teach picturing the life and adventures of a rural boy of a generation ago interpreted in car toon and live action The Pike County air in Brown County Indiana as Sterling North describes it in his book from which the Disney picture is derived awards a prize blue ribbon to the young boy of the story for making a champion of a discarded little black ram lamb thus "doing the best he could with what he to confirm the theme of the story County air scenes with all their color and excitement culminate a clash of wills between young Jere miah Kincaid and his austere but lovable Granny Kincaid whose prob lem was to raise the boy The actidn predominantly by living players although there is some car toon animation to embelish the main narrative is centered upon Bobby Driscoll 11 year old star as the ambitious headstrong farm lad Beulah Bondi as the pious but practical grandma Burl Ives as the village blacksmith who singe half a dozen new songs especially written for the picture Harry Carey (in his last role) as a shrewd judge of live stock and human nature and Luana Patten the devoted comrade of Jeremiah in all the adventures Hundreds of extra players bring authentic atmosphere and interesting bits to the action The story of fond recollection is told via the voice of the man who was the boy out of his family album and scrapbook in animated cartoon treatment It is rich in music as well as humor and tenderness and the nostalgic note of the American scene of a recent yesterday arm Bureau ROTATION NEEDS Lack of nitrogen is showing plainly on three of the six Morrow plots at the Illinois College of Agri culture These hunger signs empha size the importance of a good rotation that includes legumes On the continuous corn plots with and without fertilizers and on the corn oats rotation without soil treat ment the lower leaves and stalks are signs of lack of nitro gen But on the corn oats plot with manure lime and phosphate and on the corn oats clover plots with and without these soil treatments all of the com plants are entirely green indicating plenty of nitrogen A Lang Illinois College of Agri culture agronomist says manure furnishes some nitrogen but not enough got to have legumes in your rotation to provide enough at least one quarter of your cropland in legumes each year And legumes put your sou condition to grow crops too Lang said that commercial gen fertilizer might be used plants show hunger signs of nitrogen But the corn could not use this substitute plant food to the fullest because the soil would be in poor packed top from lack of legumes in the rotation all adds up to just Lang insists you build up your soil fertility with mineral fertilizers alone irst you need a good rota tion including son was born to Mrs Robert Allen of Creve Coeur
