Archaeologist Dana Bardolph holds up a large section of bone found in what is believed to be a burn pit or cooking pit at the site of an ancient Native American settlement in a farm field in East Peoria. Archaeologists have found numerous bones, bone fragments, pottery shards and pieces of tools at the site.

That new county, Tazewell, was created by the Virginia General Assembly on December 20, 1799. The town of Tazewell is a picturesque community that was established to serve as the county seat for Tazewell County the following year.

The largest community in Tazewell County is Pekin, the County seat, with a population of more than 34,000. Tazewell County also contains 15 other incorporated communities, with populations ranging from a few hundred to more than 23,000.

Among the tribes that occupied this area in historic times were the Lenape (Delaware), and the Iroquoian-speaking Cherokee and members of the Iroquois Confederacy. In the spring of 1771, Thomas and John Witten established the first permanent settlement in Tazewell County at Crab Orchard.

The Indians who lived along Gravel Ridge in the 1820s and 1830s were primarily Pottawatomi, but much of Tazewell County also was home to Kickapoo bands.

Tazewell County was formed in 1799 and was named for Senator Henry Tazewell of Norfolk County. Senator Tazewell opposed the formation of the county and only consented to support this westward expansion of Virginia when told the county would bear his name.
