The rural setting among the rice terraces was just beautiful. Far better than the pictures show. The Balitrees residents were so warmly welcomed by the villagers it made the stay super special. All our activities were arranged in the village, from making coconut oil to learning Gamalan music. We were also warmly welcomed to the local temple religious ceremony. I really enjoyed the yoga. The accommodation was spotless and comfortable.

Helpful Things to Know Before Traveling to Bali for a Yoga Retreat

Flights: Booking flights to Bali is easy because you only have one option; Ngurah Rai International Airport is the only airport in Bali and it welcomes millions of travelers every year. I recommend booking flights with WayAway (flight aggregator).

Visas: Passport holders from over 80 countries – including the UK, Canada, and the United States – must obtain a single-entry Visa on Arrival (VOA). You can do this when you arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, or you can apply for an e-VOA online before you arrive. Cost is around 33 USD and is valid for up to 30 days with the option to extend once you are there at a local immigration office. If you want to stay in Bali for over 60 days, you can apply for a Visitor Visa (B211A) before you travel.

Transportation: The best way to get around Bali and to your retreat from the airport is by private driver or taxi. When I was there I used a mix of private drivers, taxis, and moped rentals.

Many yoga retreats in Bali either include airport transfers in their retreat price or offer it for an additional fee.

If you prefer to take a taxi, they are readily available at the airport but they will most likely overcharge you. Instead, use Grab, Bali’s ride-hailing app. The Grab taxis are much cheaper than the regular taxis.

WIFI: Most retreats will have wifi, as well as most cafes and other public areas. If you want to have cell service I recommend getting an eSIM from Airalo.

Travel Insurance: I recommend getting travel insurance. It’s affordable, and in my opinion, well worth it. I use and recommend SafetyWing.
